Zao Onsen
Set in Zao Onsen and only 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Takasagoya Ryokan offers accommodation with city views, free WiFi and free private parking. A public bath is available for guests. The ryokan features family rooms. The staff was very kind, as expected from a family owned ryokan. The bath area is small, but you schedule your personal bath time. Food is incredible, a must try when visiting Zao. Location is near the main attractions, like the cable car is reachable by walking. Lots of nearby onsens.
Tendo Onsen, Tendo
The ryokan offers soothing natural hot spring bath in natural stone tubs and an open-air hot springs bath. A shared lounge features a tatami (woven-straw) floor and view of a Japanese garden. The ryokan also offers free use of bicycles. it is very new, and cozy. Great location and staff is very good.
Matsushima
Featuring free property-wide WiFi, a spa centre and a seasonal outdoor pool, Matsushima Ichinobo offers accommodation in Matsushima. The ryokan has a hot spring bath and sauna, and guests can enjoy a drink at the bar. Free private parking is available on site. Everything is amazing. It is expensive, but you get what you pay. I recommend staying for at least 2 nights. I stayed for only one night, and I think I could have enjoyed more (like the gardens and the free rental bike service) if I had more time. Having said that,I thoroughly enjoyed my bedroom, the lounge, restaurant, the baths. The free all you can eat ice cream in the lounge was also a positive surprise.
Aizuwakamatsu
Japanese-style rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor and traditional futon bedding, while Western rooms come with beds and an en suite bathroom. All rooms are air-conditioned and fitted with an LCD TV and a fridge. Lovely building and interior. Comfortable, peaceful and welcoming. Easy walk from the station and a short stroll from town. Half board dining was exceptional. Excellent hosts.
Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests. Dewa Shrine is located an 8-minute walk away. Free WiFi is available in all areas. I kept receiving recommendations for Tamonkan on Booking.com and Google Maps while searching for accommodation in Shonai. Despite being hesitant to book due to its distance from the airport and the specific location we needed for that weekend, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! Our stay at Tamonkan exceeded all expectations. It was our first experience staying at a Ryokan since we moved to Japan earlier this year. The place was exceptionally clean, and the food was simply amazing! The neighborhood was peaceful and quiet, and it was only a 10-minute walk to the entrance of Mt.Haguro, with cozy local shops where we could grab lunch and snacks. (By the way, I highly recommend booking a room with breakfast and dinner to save yourself the hassle.) I had concerns about the shared Sento, but even on busier days, I never had to share the bath with other in-house guests. It was a splendid experience, and we're already planning to stay at Tamonkan again the next time we visit Shonai.
Zao Onsen
Located within a 10-minute walking distance from the Zao Sky Cable aerial lift, Miyamaso Takamiya features 9 natural hot spring baths for guests to enjoy. The wooden structure of the property portrays a traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. Stunning historical ryokan with a number of historic and new onsens. The rooms are renovated in a gorgeous traditional Japanese style and the meal was exceptional. The chef kindly catered for my allergy as I advised in advance. Staying at this ryokan was an exceptional experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Zao Onsen.
Tsunagi Onsen, Morioka
At Shikitei Morioka TsunagiOnsen Ryokan, guests can relax in the outdoor/indoor hot spring baths or get a soothing massage at a surcharge. Luggage storage service is available at the front desk and a gift shop and drinks vending machines can also be found on site. It is a very convenient that there’s indoor spring pool. The food was very good, we stayed 2 nights, and they changed the menu. I even think they upgraded. I love traditional spring hotel. The service is person to person feel very warm.
Matsushima
The air-conditioned rooms feature a TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags. Most rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding, while some rooms come with a private open-air bath. The en suite bathroom comes with a hairdryer. The view the room was outstanding! The staff members went above and beyond to help us. My wife has celiac disease and needed special care to be taken with meals and they did an amazing job of providing 2 very large and intricate safe meals each day with no issue.
Senboku
Katakurinohana has lake views, free WiFi and free private parking, situated in Senboku, 15 km from Nyuto Hot Spring. It is set 49 km from Morioka Station and features free shuttle service. The ryokan features a hot spring bath and a lift. The scenery advertised on Booking.com especially the private onsen, the lobby faced lake view, looked cozy in the ads, every room has lake view….but..
Kitakami
Located in Kitakami, 42 km from Chuson-ji Temple, Yasuragino Yado -Iyashino Yu- provides accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. The property is situated 42 km from Motsuji Temple, 3.4 km from Kitakami Station and 15 km from Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum. We loved our stay at Matsuo House. Taka, Oraphin and Yuuchan were amazing hosts. They were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The rooms are traditiinL tatami rooms, futon beds. The lodge is right beside one of the public onsens and close to the chairlifts. Highlight of our ski trip to Japan. We will be back. Especially loved our morning greetings from 3 yo Yuuchan - "sleep well?" We sure did. Xx
It’s well located. Close to the most famous onsen in Zao. The rooms are typical ryokan room, but I had to set my own futon. Onsen are great too
A traditional japanese style ryokan, with all the bells and whistles: tatami floor, futon beds, yukata, own onsen. The room was lovely, the food tasty and the owners extremely friendly. Can only recommend.
This Ryokan has one of the best hot spring water in Japan. It’s our fourth time to come visit here, and I always cannot appreciate enough everything about this Ryokan. Best Onsen, food is fabulous and staff members are super kind. We will surely come back as always.
This is a gorgeous Japanese inn (Ryokan). The lady who runs it speaks good English and is very kind, friendly and helpful, as are the staff. The room was beautiful and I slept comfortably on my futon after a dip in the private bath. I had breakfast in the morning and it was one of the best Japanese breakfasts I’d had and so beautifully presented. The hotel is a 15 min walk from the station and therefore, within a 15 min walk there are quite a few places to eat. The owner can help you with all the recommendations of Aizu Wakamatsu too.
Comfy rooms, fresh sheets, yukata. Tatami mats are clean and comfy. Friendly couple and cute dogs!! We felt very welcome. Please use „Takagimachi“ if you come by train and have luggage, better streets/concrete and space on the sidewalk. Best thing: tattoo-friendly Onsen on 3rd floor!!!
The atmosphere and ambiance are very peaceful. This is a place to stay if you want to have a nice ryokan and onsen experience. Everything is basically straightforward. Staff is not proficient in english, but if you use google Translate, that will help. The food was great with japanese traditional breakfast and dinner. The whole experience was excellent. The onsen was also good. So if you like onsen, most likely, this is a place to go.
Lovely traditional Ryokan with meals cooked and served sitting on the tatami floor around an Irori sunken fire. The staff attended to cooking the various courses over the hot coals and even breakfast was cooked this way. It was delicious and a great experience. Nice onsen and lovely staff and nostalgic old building.
Onsen (outdoors is best I think, you over look the waterfall and in our case falling snow). Ryokan style / tatami sleeping arrangements. Generous sized room.
